Partial copy of Rockefeller Center's deleted NBC page

NBC STUDIOS

Print

No major tenant has been here longer, occupied more space, or become so widely identified with Rockefeller Center than NBC. Since the radio studios of the pioneering broadcast company opened here in 1933, Americans have tuned in to hear or watch Arturo Toscanini and the NBC Symphony Orchestra, the Today Show, the Tonight Show, Saturday Night Live, and countless other celebrated broadcasts.
The construction of the studios called for a remarkable feat of engineering: the studios floated on immense, felt-covered steel springs suspended from the building’s structural elements to insulate them from any external sound. More than 1500 miles of wires and cables were installed by the engineers, who were determined to provide the “technological overcapacity” that would eventually enable NBC to move seamlessly from the Radio Era to the Television Age.
